Five Steps To Healthy Teeth

We have all been bombarded since our childhood years with information about sugary food and drinks lead to tooth decay. How certain citrus fruits, fruit juices and sparkling water can cause our teeth to erode and become sensitive, and how incorrect tooth brushing can similarly gum recession.

On top of that, with so much information currently populating media and the Internet, we’ve compiled a short list of tips than can help keep your mouth healthy.

Step 1: Change your toothbrush

Make sure you change your toothbrush or the head of your electric toothbrush at least every two to three months, otherwise you’re just transferring bacteria to your mouth.

Step 2: Snack less

As plenty of us know, our favourite fizzy drinks and sugary goodies are one of the main causes of tooth erosion and tooth decay. The most important action we can take to limit tooth erosion is to make sure we reduce our sugar intake as much as possible and when consuming fizzy drinks, use a straw to limit the contact the sugary liquid has with your teeth. Of course a sweet treat once in a while is perfectly okay, however try to limit daily snacking between meals as it’s often the frequency not the amount of sugar we consume which leads to tooth decay

Step 3: See the light

Dark-coloured foods are notorious for causing discolouration in the naturally white teeth enamel. The best thing to do is try to avoid these foods and drinks such as coffee, balsamic vinegar and red wine, but if you do want to treat yourself, drink a glass of water after as this will help minimise staining.

Step 4: Don’t get stuck up

Sticky foods are your mouth’s worst nightmare for unwanted plaque! Healthy snacks such as dried fruit, raisins and fruity roll-ups require us to chew harder and for longer, allowing them to get more and more stuck into our teeth, leading to a build-up of plaque. Make sure you rinse with water and pay extra attention when flossing at night to remove any food particles lodged in your teeth.

Step 5: Don’t forget about us!

With our lives getting busier and busier, it is easy to lose track of dental appointments, eye appointments and so on. It is crucial to make time in your diary to visit your dentist at least annually to ensure any early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or even other oral conditions can be diagnosed early to minimise the risk of infection, or early tooth loss.
